On 8 May 1974, the railway employees went on an indefinite strike under the leadership of AIRF for their demands. However, this strike on Central Railway had started a week earlier on 1/5/1974 due to the arrest and death in jail of the then General Secretary of NRMU Com. Malgi, whom the employees fondly called Mama Malgi.
NRMU’s respected General Secretary Com Venu P Nair ji decided to celebrate the golden jubilee of the said historic strike from 8/5/2024 to 28/5/2024 on Central Railway and in this episode, today Parwana Bhavan in Nagpur Division became the first witness of this historic decision where a group of about 850 railway employees from every corner of Nagpur Division participated.

Addressing the meeting, the respected General Secretary said that due to the then situation, the labor organization was forced to take the decision to go on strike. The stubbornness of the then powerful Prime Minister Late Smt. Indira Gandhi had also agitated the workers’ union.
The workers’ unions had collectively decided to go on strike, the three-banded union affiliated to the Congress not only withdrew from the strike at the last moment but also tried its best to weaken and make the strike unsuccessful. They themselves went out to do their duty but also tried their best to get our comrades arrested, tortured and stabbed the workers in the back and betrayed them.
“We will work for twelve months and will take the payment for thirteen months.” The strike held on the main demand of bonus ultimately resulted in the change of government in 1977. It was only after that historic strike that the railway employees started getting bonuses after the change of government and Late Madhu Dandavate ji became the Railway Minister.
